This year I made these fun hot chocolate jars to give at Christmas, they were relatively simple and easy on the budget as well. A great idea for friends and family when you want to give a small gift, that isn’t junk! Plus, everything is better in a mason jar. It’s a fact.
The hubby and I had a fun afternoon prepping gifts and cooking a dish for his Christmas Eve dinner at the firehouse. And of course, we had to enjoy some festive ale during the process 😉
I found this handy video from The Domestic Geek that describes how to make 5 different versions of these, I based mine off the peppermint version. Instead of mixing the first three ingredients, I added them separately so you can see all the layers.
Here’s what you need, per jar
- 1 pint size mason jar, with lid
- 1/4 cup dry instant milk
- 1/2 cup unsweetened cocoa, I used the Tollhouse brand
- 1/2 cup sugar
- 1/3 cup chocolate chips, I used both milk and white
- 2 candy canes, lightly crushed
- mini marshmallows
Add all the ingredients in the above order, creating layers. After the candy canes, add as many marshmallows that will fit. Add the lid on top. I liked that this recipe was per jar, so you can make as many or as few as you’d like! I ended up making 12.
**Directions for making the hot chocolate: Take out the marshmallows and set aside for garnish. Shake the remaining ingredients together, mixing thoroughly. Add 1/4 cup mix to 1 and 1/4 cups warm milk or water.
Decorate your jars any way you wish, I tied a piece of Christmas ribbon and added a tag with instructions. I found both of these in the dollar bins at Michaels. If you’d prefer, you can also print tags.
And there you have it! Easy and fun gifts to give 🙂
